The new teachers, primarily Omanis, will be recruited in the 2025-26 academic year
Muscat, Mar 3, 2025: The Ministry of Education in Oman is set to strengthen its teaching workforce with the recruitment of 4,000 new teachers – primarily Omanis – in the 2025-26 academic year. This will bring the total number of teachers appointed under the 10th Five-Year Plan to more than 19,000, a significant increase compared to the 6,800 recruited in the previous plan. The expansion reflects the government’s commitment to improving education quality and addressing the growing demand for teachers in the country.
During a recent session hosted by Majlis A’Shura, Dr Madiha bint Ahmed al Shaibani, Oman Minister of Education, outlined the ministry’s progress in school education policies, human resource development, training, and private school education. She emphasised the continued growth of the education sector, driven by government support and the Royal Directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan and Prime Minister of Oman.
The number of students enrolled in government schools has surged from 678,000 in the 2020-21 academic year to 817,000 in 2024-25, marking a 20.5% increase. To accommodate this growth, the number of schools is set to rise to 1,306 by the 2025-26 academic year, up from 1,182 in 2020-21, a 10.4% increase.
Private and international schools have also witnessed substantial expansion. The total number of private and international schools, including kindergartens, has grown from 880 in 2019-20 to 1,223 in 2024-25, an increase of 39%. Student enrolment in private schools has risen accordingly, from 189,000 in 2019-20 to 233,000 in 2024-25, including 96,000 in pre-school education.
